My January 2024 Digital Scrapbooking Update
Digital Pocket Album
I'm thrilled to share that I'm embarking on my tenth year of creating a digital pocket album. It's become such an ingrained part of my routine that I hardly give it a second thought anymore—I simply keep moving forward. You can read about my digital pocket scrapping process here.
Reflecting on the enduring success of my weekly pocket albums, I pinpointed two key practices that have been instrumental in sustaining this project. First, the use of a consistent template eliminates the daunting prospect of a blank canvas. Although I might shuffle elements around, I'm not burdened with selecting a new layout template or staring at a blank page each time. This consistency removes a significant barrier to creativity. Second, breaking down the process into manageable tasks—editing photos, arranging them in the layout, and adding decorations at separate times—ensures progress despite the constraints of a busy schedule. I am now trying to apply these principles to my other projects as well.
Memory Planner
I kept up with this memory planner for all of 2023 and I'm looking forward to going through it again. Again, it only takes small amounts of time. Every morning I take a few minutes to write down what I did the days before. At some point I will choose the photos for the day and load them onto the daily page. And then at another point I will add decoration to the pages.
This is the digital planner I'm using, and you can read more about digital planning here
On This Day Journal
I've really been enjoying my On This Day Journal as well. I have set up a travelers notebook template that I use, and then I will occasionally browse my photo archive for photos from the current day in the past. Then at some point after bringing the photos into the TN template, I will decorate the pages. It's really fun to look through a month and see all the different things I have done through the years. (This is the template I am using, slightly modified. I haven't released my monthly notebook yet because I am working out the kinks, but if you are interested in using it and testing it out, leave a comment below.)
Other Journals
While I might not always mention it, this year marks the sixth anniversary of my line-a-day journal, maintained in a Google Docs spreadsheet. You can access the template here. Additionally, I cherish a poetry journal filled with favored poems and a Tea Journal where I document moments of tea enjoyment.

Creative Ways to Use Texture in Your Scrapbook Layout
Recently, I've embraced texture as the cornerstone of my design approach, applying it to both the graphics I've design and the layers of my scrapbook layouts. Ensuring a rich variety of textures has become a pivotal aspect of my creative process. I'm excited to share with you some of my essential texture-based techniques and must-have elements that have transformed the way I craft my designs whether you are creating your own digital scrapbooking kits or digital scrapbooking layouts.
1. The Versatility of Paper Elements
Paper elements are an iessential part of my toolkit. I love experimenting with an array of paper textures – think of clipped papers, torn edges, fringes, paper flowers, and delicate doilies. Each type brings its own unique touch, adding depth and interest to any layout.
2. The Sparkle of Sequins
Sequins have become a non-negotiable in my layouts for their ability to add instant sparkle and dimension. Scattered loosely, they easily create a sense of movement and liveliness, all without overwhelming the design, even when layered extensively.
3. The Organic Touch of String & Stitches
String and stitches bring an unmatched organic feel to digital layouts. Their uneven, natural look is perfect for breaking up the sometimes too-perfect symmetry of digital designs, adding a handcrafted essence that’s both subtle and striking.
4. The Softness of Fabric and Tulle
Integrating fabric and tulle elements adds a layer of soft, whimsical charm. These materials offer a contrast to the more structured elements in a layout, bringing a playful yet elegant feel that can elevate the entire design.
5. The Artistic Flair of Paint
I have a particular fondness for incorporating paint, especially in the form of splatters and marks. This not only adds a vibrant, artistic flair to the backgrounds but also infuses a dynamic, spontaneous energy into each piece I create.
6. The Dimension of Flowers (and Other Elements)
Flowers are a classic, timeless element in scrapbooking, and for good reason. Their varied shapes, sizes, and colors can breathe life into a layout. And let's not forget the accompanying leaves, which add to the botanical richness. Their three-dimensional appearance can make a page pop in the most beautiful way.
These elements are more than just components of a design – they are expressions of creativity and personality. By incorporating a diverse range of textures, each digital scrapbook layout or elements kit becomes a unique story, a visual narrative that is both personal and universal. I hope these ideas spark your imagination and lead you to explore the wonderful possibilities in your digital scrapbooking endeavors.
